Coleman was born at Blackpool Lancashire. She went to Arnold School Blackpool as head girl. She also scored every A grade on her A level exams. Steven Moffat announced at a Doctor Who press conference on 21 March that Coleman, who had replaced Karen Gillan as the companion of the Doctor following Arthur Darvill left the series and was to play the role of Matt Smith. Moffat chose her for the part because she was the most effective in her interactions with Smith and was able to speak faster than the actor.
