She reported on sports for several of the biggest media outlets across the country. She worked for The Washington Post nearly a decade, covering Grand Slam Tennis and Grand Slam Football as well playing basketball in multiple Olympics. In 2004 Nichols was transferred to ESPN for a period of nine years where she won two Emmy Awards and appeared on some of the network's most watched programs, like SportsCenter as well as NFL Countdown. In addition, Nichols was an on-line reporter for Monday Night Football broadcasts. Her next move was to CNN and Turner Sports. The show she first created and hosted was self-titled, Unguarded with Rachel Nichols, and aired weekly on CNN and CNN International. A billion viewers viewed the program across the world. Nichols worked as a journalist at TNT at the time, reporting on NBA broadcasts such as regular season games, playoffs or All-Star teams. Nichols has also been employed by TBS reporting as an anchor covering baseball and golf broadcasts. CBS broadcasted the Final Four. Through the history of 42 years of the award, this was the first time that women were one of the nominees.
